About Mike

Mike Horsfall is in demand as a composer, arranger, recording artist, concert soloist and educator on both vibraphone and piano. He has performed with Chuck Redd, Leroy Vinegar, Rebecca Kilgore and Gary Hobbs, and has recorded with Pink Martini, the Nu Shooz Orchestra and with Tall Jazz, a trio he co-founded in 1989 which was voted into the Jazz Society of Oregon’s 2010 Hall of Fame. Mike serves on the music faculty at Willamette University and Mt. Hood Community College.

Driven by the love of music

Mike Horsfall has enjoyed a successful and diverse musical career for over 40 years, serving as a concert soloist, accompanist, musical director, educator, composer, arranger, and recording artist on both piano and vibraphone. He broke into the Portland jazz scene with the vibes-bass-drums trio “Tall Jazz”, a group he co-founded in 1989. In 2010, after more than two decades of performances, recordings, and clinics, Tall Jazz was voted into the Oregon Jazz Society's Hall of Fame.

Mike has performed and/or recorded with a great many world class musicians, including Anat Cohen, Kurt Elling, Janis Siegel, Terrill Stafford, David Grisman, Ken Peplowski, Holly Hofman, Ingrid Jensen, Chuck Redd, Dmitri Matheny, Valerie Day, Rebecca Kilgore, Karla Harris, Marilyn Keller, and Randy Porter, among others. He has collaborated with Marv & Rindy Ross’ Trail Band, Pink Martini, Nu Shooz, and the Portland Baroque Orchestra. Recently, Mike has toured and recorded with Darrell Grant’s “MJ New”, a quartet honoring the music of the Modern Jazz Quartet.

Mike has been commissioned twice by PDX Jazz to present concerts for their program. He has been a regular participant in many of the regions music festivals, such as PDX Jazz, the Oregon Coast Jazz Party, Chamber Group NW, the Oregon Bach Festival, and the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival. He is currently the musical director of a long running jazz vespers series featuring many of Portland’s top jazz artists.

In addition to performing, Mike is an avid music educator, serving on the faculties at Willamette University, Mt. Hood Community College, Clark College and Oregon Episcopal School.
